Mission Statement:

The Washington Academy of Biomedical Engineering (WABME) aims to promote research, technology transfer, and education in biomedical engineering in the national capital region.  The Academy is a framework where different institutions, each with unique resources and strengths, can explore and develop interdisciplinary research projects.  This collaborative endeavor strengthens existing biomedical engineering programs and creates new scientific pathways for future discovery.

Background Information:

WABME was chartered by the biomedical engineering/bioengineering programs and activities of The Catholic University of America, Georgetown University, The George Washington University and Howard University.  The first organizational meeting was held in February of 2003, and a steering committee consisting of representatives from all four universities has met monthly since that time to shape the organization and build its programs.  The Academy is currently in the process of forming a non-profit corporation to provide a more official standing.  Currently, WABME is funded by the charter universities, the U.S. Army TATRC (Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center), and The Whitaker Foundation.

Leadership:

Dr. Murray Loew, The George Washington University, President

Dr. Seong K. Mun, Georgetown University, Program Director

Dr. Mohamed Chouikha, Howard University, Membership Director

Dr. Binh Tran, The Catholic University of America, Finance Director

Dr. Kenneth H. Wong, Georgetown University, Secretary

Activities:

Topical one-day workshops will be held quarterly during the academic year, and will bring together problem-rich biomedical disciplines and solution-rich engineering and scientific communities for focused discussion and brainstorming.  These workshops seek to improve the quality of life though basic research, technology development and education.  The workshops will provide a starting point for collaborative research, so that current research projects can be strengthened and new research projects can be born.  Summary reports from each workshop will be distributed to workshop attendees and Academy members, and made available electronically through this website.  Reports will also be published in peer-reviewed journals as appropriate.

Education of future generations of biomedical engineers will also be an important goal of WABME.  The Academy will provide for a transparent means for students at any of the participating institutions to learn and do research at any of the other institutions.  Students will be encouraged to participate in WABME workshops, and we will seek to support a student ‘research fair’ in the near future that will showcase student research and provide an opportunity for employers to recruit interns or new employees.  We hope to also support outreach programs for high school students, high school teachers, and undergraduate summer interns, in order to attract talented learners at all levels into the biomedical engineering field.
